The Secret Life of Pets: Movie Review

So, it was Peter’s birthday the other day and we went to see Pets.

And I loved it to bits so I’m doing a review.

Cuz apparently that’s what I do when I love things.

The Secret Life of Pets: Movie Review

Synopsis:

Max is a spoiled (excuse me . . . I take issue with this so I’m crossing it out) terrier who enjoys a comfortable life in a New York building until his owner adopts Duke, a giant and unruly canine. During their walk outside, they encounter a group of ferocious alley cats and wind up in a truck that’s bound for the pound. Luckily, a rebellious bunny named Snowball swoops in to save the doggy duo from captivity. In exchange, Snowball demands that Max and Duke join his gang of abandoned pets on a mission against the humans who’ve done them wrong.

What I thought:

Good Stuff:

Being quite honest right off the bat, I think I’ve found one of my new favorite animated movies.

BECAUSE THE DOGS, GUYS. THEY DID THE DOGS RIGHT.

Okay, really. Katie (the owner) and Max are so perfect with their relationship. It’s not the clichéd, fictional thing. But it’s like actual, legit dog and human stuff.

So yes, I liked that a lot. ❤

Duke . . . they got the big-dog/little-dog dynamic right. And the new dog thing. It was a great relational subplot throughout the movie.

The pets themselves were so great and different. The dogs doing all their adorable doggy things and the cats being sarcastic and aloof. They kept doing these little things to explain random pet behaviors and I loved it.

Plus, Snowball and his Flushed Pets. Snowball was the best action bunny ever. Anyone remember Boingo from Hoodwinked? He was like Boingo done ten times better. And (small thing) they did a good job choosing the rejected pets for his gang. Lots of lizards. A pig (with tattoos in the pattern of his meat cuts which was genius). And some grumpy cats.

The plot was a lot more fast-paced than you’d think from the goofy previews. Which unexpected from what I guessed it would be, but still nice.

And the ending.

It wasn’t particularly, jaw-dropping spectacular or twisty. But it was incredibly sweet and heart melting. Multiple “AAAAWWWWW”s from the theater audience. ❤ I loved the full-circle it made with the theme in the end. My dog-person heart was utterly melted.

Bad Stuff:

There were a few creepy animals. A one-fanged, giant viper with a wonky eye that the little kids were scared of. A hairless cat with huge eyes, holes in his ears and an Australian accent. I personally thought it was funny, but it could freak out some kids.

Something else . . . not quite a gripe against the movie itself, I guess?. . . but I was not expecting to have to cover my baby sister’s eyes through an extended preview for some new Ghostbusters. :S

Overall: An awesome family movie that can be enjoyed by pretty much everyone. And a special treat for animal lovers like myself.

Have you seen Secret Life of Pets? Think you will?

          1. Some people are saying it’s good, but I don’t want to bother; for one thing it’s getting too much hype for me to want to invest in it and for another I didn’t like the original either.
I’m kind of weird like that; if something is really super uber popular or gets shouted over a lot then I don’t want to get involved. I love my small but tight-knit fandoms, thank you very much.

          2. I’ll have to pull it back out when we have our books. XD
I had the guys leave out a trunk I thought I packed my clothes in when we had the big storage-unit-transfer day. Apparently I didn’t put my clothes in there. So no fresh shirts. But I got my Horatio Hornblower book and my paracord whip so hey.

  1. Yes, we’ll probably watch it. I can’t wait! 😀
BTW, have you checked out TMDWA yet? *smiles as you try to figure out abbreviation* *throws hands in air and explains that I wasn’t the first one to use it* 😀

      1. HA HA!!! 😀 😀 😀
Yes, that’s what I meant. 🙂 I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ve heard some very- shall we say- vehement responses from both sides of the coin. 😉 😛

        1. Yeeeaaah… I have a bit of a feud going with Jonny over at Fishing 4 Ideas…
(He keeps insisting that only the strong survive and I keep insisting that he’s HYDRA)

  2. Yeah I was actually more excited about finding dory but me and movie theaters aren’t a thing (my siblings have a video of my running commentary for Lord of the Rings)

  3. I actually just saw it on Sunday! It was really good =). I think some of my favorite parts were the party sequences, where the owners are away and the pets are just having a great time. I’ve never had a dog, but the one cat especially was so perfect xD

Any thoughts?
